If you intend to have a new boiler it will be located some where else in your home obviously then your existing back boiler will become redundant but you can still keep your fire as a single appliance only.
Any Gas Safe engineer with sufficient enough knowledge will first de-commission back boiler and make safe but still allow you the facility to use to gas fire if you wish as they are classified a two separate appliances, don't bother asking him to fit a more modern gas fire in return as they come as a paired item, so you either ask him to completely remove the back boiler and fire and ask him to install a more modern fire if you still want a gas fire.

It all depends on the manufacturers instructions of the appliance in question, they override gas safe if I was the gas engineer on site, I would consult the manufacturers ask the questions of using the fire as a single appliance, I would also get this in a written email to confirm it then covers all bases with engineer and customer
