Painting coloured external silicone render
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
My house has an external creamy coloured render. I have been told that it is a unique British gypsum render and that it won't take a traditional masonry paint e.g sandtex. Is this true , do I need a specialist silicone based paint , or is it wrong information. The render seems to absorb and then expel moisture when it rains

Sandtex is worn twice with exterior paint, it will certainly have a good color, and its durability for 15 years guarantees Sandtex. I only use excellent paint for the best

Silicone based render is designed to never be painted as it shrinks and expands with the weather. Thats why you pick it in a desired colour when applying. For definitive solution you should contact the product maker for guaranteed answer as some products differ from one another.

The most appropriate coating depends on the construction of the property. A solid-walled building needs a permeable coating so a permeable paint too and any other paint will fail if used. Masonry paint isn't really traditional, more like 'modern-traditional'. Traditional paints are lime-based, permeable.

Yes you can paint previous coated silicon based renders but use a good quality paint and make sure it lets the render breath . If you still have a guarantee for the render check with the installer.

If it is silicon render ,then Jub, for example who manufacture silicone render make paint specifically for it. It sounds like you have a mineral based scraped texture render. This is because silicone renders don’t absorb moisture. You will need to find out the manufacturer but it won’t be British gypsum. You cannot use gypsum externally. Hope this helps.
