Retaining wall in garden being built 12ft tall with 200mm footings?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.01 PM

Hi I'm having a breeze block retaining wall being built that will stand around 12ft tall with blocks laid flat, however I'm not sure the footings are going to hold, they are 8 inches deep, so 4 inches of sand and 4 inches of concrete, does that seem ok?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

For a wall that big, you need to think of the weight. That is a very heavy wall so i would say, at least 500 mm of concrete for the footing.

As listed above this seems very small for a 12ft wall. You'd at least want to double it to 400mm to enable stability and strength for the wall

For a start you dont put any sand in the foundations, needs to be 400 to 500 mm of solid concrete and allow 100 mm bearing both sides of the wall, so if the walls 9 inch thick the foundatings need to be 18 inch wide.

Footings is more on the width of the footing to spread the weight general rule of thumb is there should be bearng of the same width of the wall each side of the wall .for example 215 mm wall should be 645mm wide footing but i would also say that 200 mm would not be deep enough either id have at least 300 deep depending on the hardness of the trench floor too.

for a wall 12 foot in height you need at least 900mm wide and at least 600mm depth and 30n concrete

The footing should be for a 12ft solid concrete retaining wall should be a min of 500mm deep but also a min of 800mm wide with a corbel of block stepping in gradually from the side which the weight will be on its a lot more work but 12ft wall definitely needs a corbled base or it will start to lean with in the first 12 months especially if it's a long stretch
