I’ve recently moved in to a house and began decorating, I’ve removed wall paper from a recently put in stud wall from previous owners, the wallpaper literally peeled straight off with no need for water or anything and left the fresh unpainted wall underneath. I’ve gone to remove the wallpaper glue off the wall before painting and seem to have great difficulty in doing so because the wall seems so fresh I’m just moving the glue around the wall. I’ve tried scrubbing with everything you could imagine, I’ve managed to scrap some off, yet once dried it’s just as shiny, I know I need to do a mist coat before painting but I don’t know how to remove the glue. I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi. Have you tried sugar soap?
I always use this to remove paste residue, made up in solution with warm water and using a sponge wet the surface and work away at the residue, rinsing the sponge as you go. Then wipe over with another sponge soaked with just warm water.
While the surface is still wet feel with your fingers for any tackiness, if there is repeat above till it all feels clean.
This is a labour intensive job but is often missed out by everyone including trades.
Any paint applied to a wall that hasnt had residue removed can potentially react with it at any point in the future. Good luck with your prep
A very good product is Zinsser DIF. This is an enzyme-based wallpaper stripper, which breaks down the adhesive and makes it soluble in water.
Apply the solution to the walls, wait about 10 minutes for it to start breaking down the adhesive, then rinse off (changing water frequently).
If necessary, a second application once all the thick adhesive coating has been removed will remove the final residue.
Hi.
If you find using sugar soap to labour intensive try using guards a problem solving paint by zinger.just paint on wall let it dry.
Or crossline walls with lining paper nicer Finnish and will make walls feel warmer
Yes I agree with the other tradesmen to use sugar soap to get the wallpaper adhesive residue off. Then after ones dry and all the sticky residue has gone Finish off with sandpaper
