Re-wiring of the house with suspended timber floors

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.23 PM

Hi guys, We are going to re-wire our house which is an old semi-detached Victorian house with a really old wiring. We are starting with the living room re-wiring, and have a question: - do we need to isolate the wire into a conduit and should it really be more than 5cm away from the wooden joist? If we do isolate it, it should be metal conduit that we need to use? And if we use metal conduit, can we just adjust into the joist, and not drill the joists to have 5cm away from the wooden floor? Your advice would be really helpful, as we are stuck with it. I've read building regulations and requirements, but it's still not 100% clear :) Regards, Violeta

Get an electrician. A rewire isn’t a simple job. How will you test and certify it ?

You will need to contact Building Control for consent, once obtained, you have to install it, design it all to BS 7671 18th Edition when that’s done BC will then send someone to test it all out and hopefully it will all be up to scratch. Better still employ a registered spark who self certifies and can notify BC on your behalf. Good luck with all that anyway.

I don’t think a credible electrician would be a party to a DIY rewire , you’re putting power through the fabric of a building you have paid a lot of money for and people have to live in safely . There are reasons why there are statatory and non statatory laws and regulations put in place to stop this kind of practice .
