Low mains water pressure
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.22 PM
Hello, Currently I have a 22 mm black plastic mains water supply which is giving me around 9 litres of water per minute. The stop tap inside the house is fully on. This seems low and I am looking at upgrading my boiler as it is too small to heat my detached house. But when you see boilers like the Worcester Greenstar Highflow 550CDi which has a flow rate of 25 litres a minute, it's hard to see how my supply would work with a boiler anywhere near close to this flow rate. Is this something that is easy to fix please?

first contact your water board to see pressure and volume of their supply, they are legally obliged to supply at .7 of a bar, this may not be suitable for combi boilers.

The stop cock may not be fully opened on the inside, might need to replace it. You can install a mains booster pump on the mains which will now transform your water pressure to make it suitable for a combi.

You can install a booster pump to your incoming main but you can only pump at a maximum of 12litres a minute if you do this (water regulations 1999).
Where did you check the flow rate at? did the tap you used have any isolation valves or flexible tap connectors present? These can reduce flow substantially. Also flow and pressure are two separate things. You may only have 9litres a minute flow rate but you could have 4 bar of pressure for example.
I would also as suggested above make sure your main stop taps are fully open both in side the property and on the property boundary and that they are not faulty.
