Possible to fence into a wall?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

I have a garden wall in sections, 2 straight 390cm long and 2m-2.2m high sections each with 3 pillars, one at each end and one centrally. Then a smaller 1m curved wall at the end by the garden gate. These walls are getting wobbly and will need replacing. Would it be possible to take these walls down to the bottom 2-3 rows and add fencing and posts on top instead of rebuilding which I assume would be much more expensive? Thanks

Personally, I wouldn’t advise putting post onto the wall. You could keep the base of the wall but as it’s become unstable, I would remove the bricks where posts are required and see if the wall has a sound concrete base which could be used to bolt a Met-post fitting. If the base is broken I would recommend digging out a suitable size hole, inline with the wall, which is capable of taking your new posts. The brickwork could be replaced once the post has been fitted. Your panels can be fitted above the wall to allow for painting and to prevent the panel rotting. Alternatively, you could fit your panels onto a suitable moisture barrier such as slate or a DPC onto the wall.

if jointing is strong and bricks are not crumbly it may be possible dependent on the height of the fence. Height will determine horizontal load forces at the adjoining point at the base of each post.
