Purpose of rawl plugs in brick wall
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.01 PM
Hi, On the outside of my house at the back are red rawl plugs evenly spaces along the brick. What are the purpose of these and what would the consequences be if they were filled in? I ask as we seem to have a bit of a wasp problem, they keep going in and out of them. Thanks

The only reason I can think for the rail plugs is for a trellis or leanto has there or is there currently a flower bed or grass up against the house? If yes then most likely there has been wire for roses to grow up and have since been removed. The plugs should be fine to fill over. They wouldn't be for ventilation as an air brick would/ should be used.

Might have been there from a previous cable run of armoured cable for instance

The reason your wall has rawl plugs in it is quite simply was a way to fix a wooden trellis or similar to a wall
they sound like pretty big plugs to have wasps going in and out of them
you can block them off using a bid of compo ( sand/cement mix )
( make sure the wasps are out first )
