Fitting a Granite worktop over base unit on legs- are they stong enough?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.47 PM

I am installing a granite worktop of a 100cm base unit on legs to form an island/breakfast bar in the middle of the room. The worktop size is 150x90cm, with a 25cms overhang both ends, and a 30 cm overlap on the long axis of the cupboard. The company I ordered the granite from weren't concerned, but I worry that the legs won't be strong enough, and the whole thing will collapse. So do I need to make a supporting frame to support under the cupboard? Do I fix the legs to the floor? Do I need to have a support bracket for the long overhang? The cupboard and legs are in good condition. Or I am I ok like the company thought? Many thanks

Yes it would be better to fix the legs to help stop any movement. It isn't necessarily to support the ends of the granite on a small over hang.

In my opinion. I would make a frame like you suggested. Support the worktop underneath and fix your legs. Just imagine if something accidentally pushed the legs our the way. It would cause massive damage for you. Also with the granite worktop being an expensive piece making a support frame just be be safe is a little expense to save you in the long run should anything unfortunate happen. And this should put your mind at ease knowing you've done something to support it rather than always having doubt there. Hope this helps, sorry for the long response :)
