Meter Tails & moving Consumer Unit
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.22 PM
I am going to have a bungalow completely rewired and want to have the consumer unit moved to a more accessible part of the bungalow but aware the meter tails are limited to 3 metres?. The new location for the consumer unit will be about 15 metres away from the main incomer. Is there a solution to this. This will obviously be done by an competent person but I'm curious and whether it creates any issues.

You can used armoured cable-3 core via a switchfuse and 25 mm meter tails into that. Just done it this way for a bungalow rewire as the con unit was in the garage, which was not attached to the dwelling, and the new con unit was placed in a more accessible place.

No Problem you will have to run a sub main with a suitable switch fuse and correct cable to the new consumer unit position.

Not a problem as long as it’s done via a switch fuse and has rcd protection subject to what cable you use and how it’s installed.

You can fit a suitably sized fused isolator after the incoming cutout and before the new consumer unit.

They should be run in metal trunking as the tails aren't RCD protected. Why does the consumer unit need to be so far away though? There are some nice recessed boards available if your worried about how it looks.
