Bathroom Fitting

Customer won't let me in to change what they see is wrong with the work

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

Hi I'm a bathroom and kitchen fitter have done this job for 23 years and recently fit a bathroom for a friend so no contract just verbal agreement, they were happy with the job all the time I was there I had nearly finished they they decided the didn't like the shape of the toilet it was more square than round, so she asked for me to change it. I thought it's been there for a week and it's only just come to mind, but anyway I said yes no problem do I ordered a different wc it came. I rung her to get a time and say suitable to pop back to change it and she made an excuse so I couldn't go around after several days of trying to get I to change the toilet they then sent s message listing things they thought were wrong with the bathroom and they were going to get someone in to correct them I instantly tried to call but my calls were not answered. They won't let me back to discuss and out Wright what they see wrong.where should I go with this I fear I probably will end up losing the money I supplied everything and they haven't paid a penny

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The alarm bells should have started over the toilet change. I personally do not ever do ‘mates rates’ but your case is worse. I would give them, in writing, 7days to.... 1. Pay you for the stuff and call it quits. 2. To return and finish it and get paid 3. If this fails start court proceedings against them. But do everything in writing and keep a copy. Don’t lose your temper but play it straight down the line as you would a stranger customer. I personally think they have no money to pay you hence that’s what all the you supplying everything etc. The true test is when you ask for material costs upfront at the start friend or no friend, if they agree at least you havnt lost on that score. There are rogue customers as well as rogue tradesmen, seems your friendship has got in the way of business from them.

why o why did you not get money up front !!,you could send them a letter (recorded delivery) saying you need access to address these problems, and if not you will have to go to small claims court to recover your costs, these cash jobs can be a problem both parties have no proof of what was agreed, but because of all these rouge trader programs it is harder on the trader to get justice,if they made programmes about clients who cant make up their minds, change their minds, buy realy poor equipment and sanitary where of the internet and expect you to get over the problems this causes ,and then do not want to pay, there would be nothing else on the tv,take them to court.

Hi. Not a great situation. Given that whoever these people are...the fact that they refuse to communicate with you....i think rather than try to gather opinions here, i'd say you would be better seeking legal advice

Unfortunately as you have nothing in writing your pretty much screwed, put it down to experience learn from it and never do anything without first putting in in writing.

Really? You have a legal right to remedy anything they are not happy with, as they have a legal obligation to allow you to do so. Speak with your insurer ASAP.

Sounds like they are doing this on purpose to avoid payment ...try and get more stage payments in future .

Write a letter requesting payment within 14 days (recorded delivery) best case they respond and you rectify the issues and receive payment, if there is no response you have given 14 days, next step, small claims court or debt collection, I’d recommend court
