Is it acceptable to see tape lines in new ceiling?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi In a bit of argument with the builder about whether this is acceptable, we have had new ceilings put up in house and most of the joints are visible? It looks like a straight crack. We had the tapered ceiling board and tape method used to keep costs down and I was under the impression that this would not leave any visible joints but the builder is saying that they are there because the house has uneven joists. The quote included labour, material, scrim tape, screws, timber 4"x2" and 25mmx50mm batons, joint fillers, sealer/primer. Also, there were some gaps between the walls and the ceilings of empty space (say 25/30mm) - the builder has used expanding foam to remedy then sand I believe, he is trying to charge more for labour for this, is this the correct method? He was also responsible for walls so should that have been included in his scope or is that a extra? Thanks for your help!

Hi, I have to start by saying that after a good tape and joiner there shouldn't be any gaps( ever been wall and ceiling) and definitely no visible trace of tape(on the ceiling area). In regards of the ceiling to walls areas... he should have used tape and the side that would've been seen is the one on the wall. If he didn't quote from the walls then he should have told you about the outcome and charges. In this circumstances he shouldn't have used foam and the 25/30mm gaps shouldn't have been there(really poor cutting and fitting of the plasterboard).

Doggy builder An excuse is a comfort to a fool. No disrespect intended. He has not taped up correctly and it sounds like he has not put a thick enough skim coat. Hope you haven't paid him yet

Hi, unfortunately he has no excuse for any gaps. When i re-board a ceiling, it`s not unusual for me to fill & sand 3 times due to filler sinking at the joins, so any join is TOTALLY invisible.Foaming any gaps is a bodge indeed & not professional at all.Hope this helps, Chris.
