Adding a pendant light and securing it to ceiling

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi, I'm moving into a new build block of flats and there are only downlights in the living room. I want to add a pendant light above the dining table, can it be done on the same switch as the downlights? Also, it is a 6kg pendant light. What's the best way to secure this to the ceiling as I don't think there will be wooden joists in the new build? Thanks, Dan

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

All the above answers are good but the pendant will only be on when downlights are. If you want the pendant seperate you need to get a sparks in

Yes it can just find the light that’s at the end of the run. It will be the one with one cable to it the others should have 2 cables 1 in and 1 out just make sure that they are not 12v down light if they are you will have to go back to where the transformer connects to find 230v this will probably be a junction box. There should be joists somewhere in the ceiling the plaster board has to screw into something they might not be timber a lot of new builds use thin galvanised studs now but you can still screw into them. If you screw your light to galvanised studs make sure you Earth it

Hi, it can be added to the same circuit as down lights yes. For a firm fixing it is best to find a wooden joist or fixing using butterfly plasterboard fixing for firm hold

Hi Dan A pendant can be added to the same switch as the Downlights. A new cable would need to be taken from an existing Downlights to the new pendant position (by a qualified electrician) in theory an easy enough job. The best way to fit the pendant would be to get a bit of wood above the ceiling fixed to the joists. So the weight of the pendant is on the joists and not on the plasterboard ceiling. This would either mean getting the floorboard up above the new pendant position or cutting a access panel out of the ceiling and then refitting the plasterboard. This would obviously require decoration afterwards. I hope this helps Thanks Simon
