Chimney & Fireplace

Entire chimney stack removal, from ground floor to above the roof line

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.43 PM

Hi, I'm looking for some advice about having a chimney stack fully removed from a semi-detached 3 bed house. It's not on a party wall its between my kitchen and back living room at the moment. We have plans to knock through the kitchen into the back living room to make a kitchen diner and have had a structural engineer out to measure up for the RSJ and I told him my plans for the full removal of the chimney stack. He took into account the removal of the chimney stack. What I'm really looking for, is it straight forward for the removal of the chimney stack. I'm looking at doing it myself, getting the scaffolding out to remove from above the roof and replacing tile and other roof items then working my way down from the loft into the bedroom and then into the back living room. I'll be making sure the purlins are secured and safe as they currently are sitting on the wall between the back bedroom and bathroom which is next to then chimney wall but not tied into it from an inspection I have done on it. That wall follows down into the back living room and kitchen. Once the stack is fully removed I will be getting a builder in to do the wall removal and RSJ between the back living room and kitchen to make way for the new kitchen diner. I'm sure I read with the entire stack coming down from top to bottom I don't need an supports or brackets. Any advice will be really appreciated, thank you.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi , thats right you won’t need any support brackets if you take the whole chimney out , roof down it will be very messy so cover everything up ,

Usually straight forward, messy job. Just make sure you don't hack away to much. Your wall between rooms should remain intact (i'm assuming chimney is on one side of the wall not both) and every second brick that is tied into it will have to be cut or chiseld in half (they break easily most of the time) and yes you wont need any additional support other than RSJ for that removed wall. Hope that helps
