Patio on top of rubble
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.46 PM
Back of my house has full of old bricks and rubble from the house, it's at the level where I can step out from french doors at 800mm. Can I fill the hardcore on top of it, ensure it's 100mm then fill 40mm of sand before add the slates?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You can level all the ground out and compact Down with a vibrating roller or compact plate, then fill up with hardcore and also compact that down, then you can put down membrane and then the slate.

Along with the correct compaction, make sure to break down the larger rubble, and smash the bricks into smaller pieces.
If not, when you are compacting, or at a later date, it will sink.
You should also introduced a smaller aggregate as a binding corse on the last 50mm to help it bind together. I would use a dusty type 1 inch down and slightly wet it when you're compacting.
Hope this helps !
