Communico,
It is recommended that you seek planning approval for any external alterations made to your property, however, some works are allowed under permitted development rights.
As you are looking to extend the front of your home, it is more than likely that you will require planning approval. If your extension is intended to be used as a porch and does not exceed 3 square meters in area, is no higher than 3 meters and is within 2 meters of the boundary it should fall under permitted development rights.
It is worth noting that in some areas these rights may have been removed under an Article 4 Direction, this is something you can check with your local authority.
Please note that even if your proposal does not require planning permission you will require building regulations approval for any construction works.
I hope this helps.
