Wood barge board on cottage

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM

Hi, I have an old cottage with a lovely curved barge board on the front which is in need of replacement. I was going to get it painted but 3 painters said it’s a waste of money because it’s rotting. I was going to replace it with UPVC because I have UPVC windows anyway but my neighbour has had problems with their barge board because the plastic is thinner than wood and warps and let moisture in. I think that wood is a lot stronger and looks much better and I have curved brickwork over the windows which would be hidden under straight edged UPVC. I would like to keep the look of the barge board. I believe the wood has to be of a certain quality to last years with only the occasional repaint. The guttering would need to be replaced also. I would like advice on this please Thanks!

It would have to be tantalised timber for a start and painted straight away also you can get thicker plastic which does not warp which would mean less maintenance

Replacement fascia board is as thick as the timber (replaces existing)and the thinner is called cover board.Wood wise it's all up to budget and the look but all wood need either a microporous stain or proper primer then undercoat and topcoat I've gloss or a satin finish. If done correct they won't rot.A clear base coat of wood preserver from cuprinal soaked deep into the grain and is advicable.

You will need to use full replacement upvc fascia board and remove the old timber fascia. Then there shouldn’t be any problems with warping. Hope this helps
