Does my job not pay enough? or not worth the effort?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM
Recently posted a job to rip out old open fire and replace but not with a stove, i still want a real open fire. The chimney will need plastering and ideally a beam installed, not sure if it will have to be fake or not due to the proximity to the fire. But no none seems interested, is that due to the cost not being worth it? or effort to cost doesn't match up? If that's the case then what fire place will tradesmen want to get a job for?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Its more than likely in my opinion no one wants to get involved in installing an open fire, most HETAS registered engineers are mainly interested in installing stoves as it’s much easier. There is a bit of an art in installing an open fire and because there not very popular these days a lot of fitters won’t have the skills or the confidence to tackle an open fire.

1. Any gas engineer with acs ccn1 should theoretically be able. Most will have the fire ticket because an engineer will not be able to do most cp12 gas landlord certs otherwise.
2. A gas engineer will provide a quote with a network of engineers. Ie: hetas approved chimney sweep, electrician, plasterer, etc.
Be reasonable about your expectations of cost and you might get a willing tradesman.

Hi Nigel
We no longer install any open solid fuel fires as they are about to be banned due to the amount of particulate matter that they put into the atmosphere. The government has announced this how it will policed I am not sure. At the moment it looks as though as long as the Stove is of ECODESIGN or DEFRA approved that they will be allowed to be installed but again I think these will be banned also as they are as only as good as the fuel which is put in them and so many customers burn fencing ,pallets and wood from unreliable sources??

Yes agree with Fireside design. We would be happy to survey for free and advise. Jan 2022 is the deadline date. Wood burners are also more efficient so you keep more heat in the room and with the big glass doors that the manufacturers produce you still get that warm realistic fire effect.

Hi Nigel, I back up what Fireside and Alex @ SW have said.
It's all about looking after our planet and air quality - burning seasoned logs in Eco Design Ready stoves - and then using the stoves correctly.
