Loft conversion

Hello, I am planning to convert my loft space into a storage / hobby room and was wondering if I need to ensure my roof would support the weight. The heaviest object is likely to be a desk and shelving units, as well as storage. My house was built in 1998 and has a truss type roof and is middle terrace. Can I just go ahead and start laying the boards, or will I need to strengthen anything? Any advice or who I can contact to get the roof checked would be welcome please. Regards, Lee Nicholls

Hi , you will be required to strengthen the floor joists.

Hi lee, you will need to look at strengthening the ceiling timbers you are looking to floor board on top of. It may support the weight but you will get stress cracks in your plastering underneath etc.

The timbers supporting your ceiling are unlikely to have the structural integrity to be used as a floor. Get a loft company or structural engineer in to look how you can lay floor joists before you consider covering with any kind of floor boarding.

Hi,
If you are going to be installing a fixed staircase, adding heating or boarding out your loft then this is a loft conversion subject to Building Regulations.

Hi, with a truss roof you l would need to put new joists in new rafters in to support your floor and roof plus you would need planning permission for it because it's classed as a loft conversion then
