Tarmac New Driveway
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.46 PM
I have had a new drive and it is breaking on the surface, when you walk on the drive the tarmac pieces stick to your feet, when you use a soft brush it breaks loose, when you drive on the drive just breaks the 6mm tarmac
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if it is a new drive, and providing the material or base that you laid it on is sound then you either have a material failure or the quality of laying was not up to an acceptable standard. Was the material compacted properly?
I am not a fan of 6mm DBM (Dense Bitumen Macadam) as the 6mm has no real strength and with the modern cars having power steering it is not the best material to lay.
I would much prefer 10mm DBM or a stronger material such as SMA (Stone Mastic (Asphalt) which is far more durable albeit a little more expensive.
I would call the company who laid it back to put right.

6m dense is fine for a driveway.10m is more for car park's. there's a few things 1) if it was a resurface.it needs to be bonded if not it will brush off.2) maybe it wasn't rolled with a machine roller quick enough as tarmac go's off very quickly this time of year.but in all honesty it sounds like a bad job.sorry this has happened to you

If it was a overlay onto old tarmac there should have been tacoat brushed all over drive first for new tarmac to adhere too
As above 6m dbm is find for a driveway but preparation is key
Sounds to me like material failure
