Central Heating

Boiler firing up erratically and not heating the house very well

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.46 PM

We’ve been having trouble with our central heating system and we are finding it hard to pinpoint where the issue is. When the heating is switched on, the boiler fires up to full burn and the temperature rises very quickly. Once it reaches around 70 degrees, it turns the burners off completely until the temperature has dropped to about 30 degrees and then repeats. It did this for a few weeks until it started cutting out entirely and giving an error code to say it was dry. We’ve since had a plumber round to replace a bit of pipe that was blocked, which has fixed the issue with the boiler running dry, but it hasn’t solved the weird boiler behaviour. All the pipes from the boiler to the hot water tank have been checked and are clear. Given the pipes are clear, our plumber thinks the issue is with the boiler, however he has been very honest and has said that he is not exactly sure what could be wrong with it... We’ve had 2-3 different plumbers look at it and they are all seem pretty stumped... We know that the radiators are very old and the system could do with being drained/flushed, but the plumber doesn’t think that this will fix the boiler issue. Ideally we would like to replace the radiators, but not until we’ve solved the issue with the boiler. Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong with our system? The boiler is just over 8 years old, so we were hoping that it doesn’t need completely replacing just yet and maybe we just needs one or two parts replacing. The boiler is a British Gas Glow Worm 330+ vented system with a hot water tank. Any help would be hugely appreciated! We’ve had little to no heating or hot water since December and really want to get it sorted!

It could be an air lock , try cleaning all pipes, and maybe get a boiler specialist round who literally just do boilers, is the boiler under warranty ??

Hi This could be the best exchanger on the boiler is blocked. Possibly a blocked pipe Or if you have an auto bypass valve this could be closed or faulty

We’ve had this problem recently and ended up going to boiler and running tests, turned out it was heat exchanger on our one, if your getting new radiators I would change boiler, it’s an expensive repair
