How many mist coats on fresh plaster?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM
Hi We have recently had walls replastered, I have done one mist layer. But want to know when is it safe to paint silk paint on the walls? Do I need a second misting? Cheers?

One watered down mist coat is fine, but you must make sure that the plaster is completely dry (1 week +) before using Vinyl silk paint as it will act as a moisture barrier to any water still trying to escape and you will end up with large bubbles in the paint if not.

As long as the coat has achieved the aim. I.e priming the surface, soaking into the new plaster.
Then further mist coats are usually to achieve obliteration to white.
You can carry on and coat with your finish coats/colour....but....
N.B the plaster will still be very porous!
So for the first coat thin with water to ease application etc

Normally only one Mist coat is required followed by 2-3 finishing coats of your choice of top coat. I would slightly thin out your first coat going over the most coat as mentioned above because the surface will still be slightly absorbant. Make sure the plaster is completely dry before you put the silk on as it will totally seal the surface and you could get potential problems if not fully dry. Another option is a scrubbable durable matt finish.
