Tiling

Tiling - Not sure if this is common or it's a quality issue

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.21 PM

My fitter finish the tiling of my bathroom wall. However it looks quite wrong to me because: 1) There's a 2cm gap between the ceiling and the top row of tile. Is this normal or it is a mistake of the fitter? 2) The bottom row of the tile is not full tile, due to the layout the bottom row of tiles are cut into half then connect to the floor. For me it looks quite ugly. Is it a mistake or it is normal? This is a wall in shower so no bathtub. tills run from floor to ceiling 3) On the vertical edge of the wall the line between tile is not straight. Fitter claim it is because this is old flat so the wall is not level. I'm using metro tiles. Thanks in advance for your advice. Kyle

1) This is personal preference but normally we would take the tiles right to the top or have a substantial gap that is obvious. 2cm makes it look like the job is just not finished. 2) Depends on the tile layout to best work visually in the space. 3) The walls may be a bit uneven originally but really this should be checked before and it would have been good to recommend this was resolved before or at least warn you before fitting takes place.

Hello Just sounds like not enough communication. Setting out can depend on many things like focal points, windows or obstacles. You tiler should have discussed the way he was setting the tiles out with you, where the cuts were going to be and why, and made sure you were happy with this. 1. Not great because as previously suggested it looks unfinished, maybe leave the last tile off so the gap was more like 120mm which would look more deliberate. Calculating the height with a different spacer size would have changed this, this could have been discussed and agreed. 2. Sometimes a full tile from the floor can cause a slither cut somewhere focal like round top of bath, is this why it was set out like this? 3. Again if you were told the room was not square and how this would affect the finish in the corners then you could have decided whether you wanted to plaster or board the wall(s) to make them plumb.
