Fused spur questions
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.22 PM
Basically I have a double socket that I wish to run a fused spur off each socket to control the gas cooker 13amp and the cooker hood 3amp so they would both have their own switch and own socket. I’m just wondering the best way to do this all? It’s just basically to hide the wires so I thought a switch for both above the counters and then obviously chase the wires in to sockets that are hidden underneath the worktops, I’ve read a lot of different stuff online about how to do it and how to not do it so just wondering. Thank you in advance

Hi Isaac,
It is quite straight forward if you have a fuseboard with a spare way available somewhere near. It`s also the same if your socket is on a Ring circuit or a Radial circuit, this means you don`t have to run a cable back to your fuseboard.
Before you atempt the installation though there are a few answers you must find out.
1) Is the circuit in good condition and can it take the extra load you will be putting on it?
2) Is the cable big enough for the Fuse or MCB, ie, if the Fuse is 30/32a is the cable able to carry that amperage and how is the existing/new cable to be installed.
3) If the circuit is a Ring Circuit, do the 3 conductors have continuity end to end and is the Fuse/MCB going to work or will the conductors start to overheat.
4) Is the Bonding to Earth OK at your Water, Gas and Oil pipe stop taps?, do you have continuity?
You,ll need a multi tester or a few individual testers to determine all of the above.
Once you know everything is safe, If you message me back I can help you from there.
Good Luck!

As you can tell from the other answer, given the questions you asked you would be better getting professional advice.
With kitchen appliances if you connect them incorrectly and then need to get the appliance engineers out they wont work on them.
