Lighting in Garage, can't use 2 way switch but can i add another light with switch?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.21 PM

Garage has light switch at main car garage door and not at side entrance door that is used most often, so when dark having to try and walk through to the other end of the garage to turn light switch on. I was looking to install a 2 way switch but found this can not be done as explained that i only have one main coming into the garage that should be a socket but has been change to feed a tube light and spur off to allow extra sockets. At the moment a work light that plugs into a normal 3 pin socket is being used at the side entrance which i turn on, this allows you to be able to see and walk through to the other end of the garage to turn on the main tube light on. A solution that we would like to do but check first is spur off the dual sockets located at the side entrance to a FCU with 3 amp fuse to a light switch then to a new tube light. Thanks for your time and help. Diagram that should hopefully make it more clear. https://i.postimg.cc/rwKw78JN/What-i-am-thinking-setup.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/hPCGCJ9G/Current-setup.jpg

Hello, Yes it would be possible to spur off the 13Amp socket supply into a Fused Spur/2 light switches as long as it is fused down to 3Amps of course, you will need 2 2 way light switches either end of the garage and run a 3 core/cpc between them. Bring the mains from FCU/switch wire to the light into the first switch and connect with 3 core cable to the other light switch. Then connect up the supply to the light fitting/fittings and as long as they don’t exceed 3Amps which there aren’t many light fittings that would exceed this if any, then it would acceptable to do so. Hope this helps.

It could be reconfigured easily to give you 2 way switch that you want. 2-3 hours work for a sparks. Put the socket back. Fused spur off for lighting and two switches. Assuming everything is in order and safe. Not a big job at all

Hi Mav This is not as complicated as it sounds. If you have a socket in the garage, you can fit a fused spur tapped of the socket and fuse your light supply down to 3 or 5 amps. You will need two 2-way switches with feed and switch wire at one switch with a twin and earth to your light. Run a 3-core and earth between your two 2-way switches and connect. If the existing light is wired ok ie via a 3A FCU, the easiet option would be to change the light switch to a 2 way, put another switch where it's needed, connect the switches together with 3 core & E cable.
