New boiler rumbling- not kettling

We had a boiler installed a year ago. A few times a day it makes a rumbling sound that lasts for around 30 seconds following which we can smell gas. We have had Vaillant out twice who said that the boiler is working fine and it is not Kettling. We have also had the national grid out to test for a gas leak and detected nothing. Nobody seems to know what the problem is, online forums suggest kettling however that has been ruled out by an engineer. All Vaillant have suggested is to record the sound when we hear it and send it to them- but we never know when it happens so we haven't been able to record it. I'm also not sure what good that would do. We are really concerned as a gas leak is obviously a dangerous thing. Anybody got any ideas about what the problem is?

If it's been tested for a Gas leak properly and nothing showed up on the tightness test then you can generally rest assured there s no leak unless it's only when the Boiler is firing and someone gas left the outlet test point open...... rumbling is generally either blocked heat exchanger, blocked flue, faulty fan or faulty Gas Valve all if which can be checked.

Hi, You could have a problem with the condensate outlet, if this is not 100% clear and water slowly backs up now and again you would get rumbling, gurgling type noises. Check the condensate run and where it goes, disconnect it and pour water down it and check it doesn't back up at any point . If connected inside close to an appliance run that appliance at the same time, you could have a blocked waste pipe or drain. This can cause gas smells as combustion fights against water in the heat exchanger . Hope this helps, let me know.
