What could cause a flush to shorten its water flow and cause a noise like a thud at the end of the flush

drop valve mechanism faulty,the thud may be inlet valve shutting.

It could also be the result of debris in the valve a good clean under fast flowing water may be worth a try, it’s an easy fix that can be done DIY. Andy

it sounds like main inlet valve, might need replacing, things just aren't built to last nowadays, this wasn't from victoria plum by any chance the quality of their products is awful
