Bathroom Fitting

Is tanking necessary for wet room wall?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.21 PM

I plan to build my bathroom as a wet room. My fitter told me because the bathroom wall is built with brick and cement, he can do tiling directly without apply water proof layer behind the tile. I'm wondering if this is correct or a common practice in the UK? * Thanks guys for your kind support. My fitter agree to do the full tanking for me from ground to ceiling in shower area and 1 metre in the rest area.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

simple really. Tanking is not going to blow the budget. Repairing water damage in the coming years is. Prevention is better than cure.

Yes tanking is very important and essential. At least 1 metre high on the walls with tape joining the floor and wall. This will ensure no leakage. All the best with your project. Regards Tom

Best practice is always to waterproof area directly exposed to water, like wet rooms or shower enclosures. Grout and silicone are waterproof but what if it will crack? With micro cracks you may not be aware that the water is getting behind your tiles. If this process will continue for years....you can imagine the result. Tanking is cheap enough to give yourself extra protection and a peace of mind.
