Ask a questionWindows & Door fitting
new aluminium double glazing windows and bi-fold door
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.21 PM
Hi all, we had a new extension built with thermalite blocs on the inside, insulation, cavity and outside cement blocs with render. The aluminium double glazing windows and bi-fold door were fitted to the outside wall, not covering the cavity, which has a cavity closure and plaster board on top with plaster. It seems to be very cold, especially the frame is cold and lots of condensation on, especially mornings. just wanted to know whether the window should've been fitted to the outside wall or the inside to cover the cavity. Thanks

Hi there sounds to me that the window frame has been installed correctly, although they may not have sealed the cavity area properly which would cause condensation and make it colder around that area . Removing the plasterboard that is covering the cavity areas and sealing it up properly would definitely make a huge difference.
Using insulation and or expanding foam in the cavity area then replace the plasterboard and seal the entire frame with a plastic sealant is really the only way forward

The doors should be fitted to the outer leaf with a slight set back of approx 30mm. Condensation is caused by excess moisture in your room condensating on the coldest part of the room (glass). Adequate ventilation could help with this such as ensuring trickle vents above windows and doors are open.
Cold frames is the nature of the material in these weather conditions.
