Does floor tile adhesive need to be removed before putting on Hardiebacker boards

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.20 PM

Old tiles were put directly onto floating floor chipboard. Due to damage floor needs to be reboarded with Hardiebacker and then retiled. Question: the old tile adhesive is very think covering the chipboard does this have to be removed before putting down Hardiebacker boards using lots of adhesive and recommended nails. Will this create air pockets beneath the Hardiebacker and the old tile adhesive left on the chipboard floor which becomes lose and moves?

Get rid of any wooden panel fitted on top of the original floor boards. Clean the floor boards from any nail/screws sticking out. Chech if any if the existing floorboards are moving, if yes screw them down firmly and in case replace them. Hoover the floor boards. Put hardie backer as reccomended and screw then dowm making sure your screw will hit the joists. After that your flooring will me more than enough to suit new tiling. Sometimes floors are not in level. If the misslevel exceed 20mm i nornally lay self levelling compound on to of the hardie backer previously prepared to suit.

Hi there, personally I would remove all the loose and damaged chipboard if there's any worth saving then yes you would have to remove the tile adhesive, you should really work on as flat a surface as possible
