No RCD and No Earthing Done When Full Rewire was done

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hello, I bought a property in Jan 2017 and I decided to have it all redecorated and I was advised to also rewire the whole house. So I hired an electrician to perform this task and the property was completed in Mar 2017. All money paid to the electrician for his works. Few months later, we started getting shocks in the shower. The electrician who did the rewire proved to be so unreliable and I was sure he wasn't going to turn up urgently that I hired another electrician immediately (through mybuilder.com) and he said there is no earthing done so he installed an earth for the shower and he also told me there is no RCD. At that time, I was an amateur when it comes to these things as it was my first property. Anyway, the shower issue was resolved (back in 2017) and few days ago (last week), half of the power went in the house, I called another electrician. He raised the same concerns but went more in depth. He said there is no earth bonding done for gas and water along with no rcd. Upon hearing all this, I decided to get a condition report of the property and I received the report today. I am alarmed at how much is wrong with the property given I had a full rewire done 2 years ago. Some of the things outlined in the NICEIC condition report: 1. No IP protection provided to main from water (C1) 2. Upstairs lights and sockets are on the same circuit which apparently is a fire risk 3. No RCD in the property 4. Some circuits are using the old wiring and some new 5. Cable put in PVC connector & Taped 6. HANELY BLOCK (C1) 7. METERS TAILS (C2) 8. NO bonding to gas and water (C1) 9. No CPC continuity to lighting CIR (C1) 10. One of the downstairs light is live (C1) These are some of the items listed in section F of the condition report. Given all these issues and I guess I would like to know from you please what are my choices in terms of the electrician who did the rewire? Can I claim anything from him given the work has been done is very poor and my family and I are at risk? He is not NICEIC registered, he gave me a certificate but I have just learnt from other electricians, that certificate is not an official certificate from a particular body i.e. NICEIC. I am extremely stressed about the safety of my family due to the poor state of electrics in the house. And to say the least, I spent a lot of money in getting the work done and I will have to redo the work again and spend another 3-5 thousand pounds including (redecor) once the rewiring is done. Many thanks in advance for your advice.

LET THIS BE A LESSON TO ALL CUSTOMERS. Are you sure he was an electrician? Looking at the list of faults found I very much doubt it. This is the problem when customers don't use reputed electricians who belong to a governing body (ie NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, STROMA), the work is usually dodgy and it makes it very difficult to claim anything from the so called "electrician". Had he been registered, the governing body would have dealt with everything for you and all work put right at no cost to yourself. Unfortunately, your only chance may be a small claims court, in which case the "electrician" probably wouldn't turn up and there would be a lot of time, stress and money wasted on your part only to get nothing back in return. My only advise is to admit defeat and pay a REPUTED electrician for a full re-wire, and quite urgently!

You could take him to court if you have original quotes / specification etc. But you can’t get blood from a stone. I would suggest first thing is to get your property safe ASAP then consider your options. Number one priority is c1 and c2 faults. It should be done now. People misunderstand public liability insurance. it DOES NOT COVER BAD WORKMANSHIP !!!!

When it comes for electrical work Easy to check on them All of them are registered some were All you need is name and surname and google it. You seem to use a lot and professional body will cover him self Beci is e he know what he had to go thru to get the cartography has. Public liability insurance does not cover much in fact is worthless for any claim any one can have one for £100 plus. My advice is get the professional whom take things personal and with great responsibility. See if your local Electrican can help by doing things not by bit. Rcd you can swap the consumer unit and it’s done. The things that once you touch things you get to know the full scope of the issues and problems.

Unless you can get in touch with the original electrician or who he is Part P registered with ie Napit, Niceic, Electra, Stroma etc.You wont have much come back. He should of had public liability insurance to carry out the electrical work within your property and if its as unsafe as you say you could go down that route if he had any? Otherwise as you have had a condition report carried out the best is to put right as much as you need to make your installation safe. Always go with a registered electrical company which you can check out on there registered body.

Yes public liability insurance covers accidents on the site to the public hence the name. It doesn't cover for bad workmanship. One avenue you could pursue is fraud as the person represented themselves as something they are not. That's a serious charge and might motivate them to put things right. But generally I agree with the others... not much you can do. You seem to use a lot of varying tradesmen as well... my advice.... find good ones for your needs ie sparky plumber handyman and stick with them. You are better off building relationships than flitting from one to the other. Also use personal recommendations ... not just randomly selecting people with no history or feedback... MyBuilder is all about that
