Carport ceiling creaks loudly in high winds!

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.45 PM

I live in an upstairs flat which is situated between two 3 bedroom houses. In between the two houses is a carport, which is open on both sides of the building. This means when it is windy it is a trap for the wind to gust through and when this happens there is movement in the carport ceiling which causes it to creak loudly. Major problem with this is, our bedroom is directly above the carport, so when it is windy there is no chance of sleeping and we have to sleep in the living room, which is a pain for us. The property is rented so major works at our own cost aren't an option but any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a problem that we come across on a regular basis. if its possible you can board down both side 18" inches to cut down the air-flow. Also new weather bolts will secure the sheets down on the purlins or steel. Regards, Dean Martin. Dean Martin Roofing Ltd.

Your best bet is to find out where the squeak is coming from, is it the timbers? or the plastic roofing material? If it’s the timbers it’s usually sliding slightly over the nails and that will sound like creaky floor boards. If so screws along side the nails should stop the sound almost entirely If it’s the plastic roof you’ll need to seek professional help. In most cases re pointing silicone that has blown will help but if the problem has been around a while there’s likely to be damage to the product and may need attention. Fingers crossed you find an easy solution and get some sleep 😴
