1980s screed Floor/ insulation underneath.
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.00 PM
Hello 1984 house by national builder that has block and beam on ground floor. Am wondering if insulation was laid under screed as is the practice now. Am finding it hard to find a trial area to investigate. I am leaning to no insulation as regs were minimal then explaining the 100 mm loft insulation that I upgraded to 230mm. Was anyone around then and have an idea what was done in 1984. Tried internet research without success. Thank you

Hi. About that time frame on site as brickwork sub contractor. On block and beam we had floating chipboard on 50mm jablite polystyrene slabs on vapor barrier. Some insulation
But stops cold bridge. Have a dig about in corner cosmetic patch up after. We only had screed in the kitchen area due to weight Regards

It’s very unlikely that your floor is insulated. Although insulating slabs was introduced in the 80’s it was only minimal and often traded off for thicker wall insulation.
The fact that it’s block and beam makes it even more unlikely as the free air below would have been assumed not as cold as concrete directly on sand / earth.
For clarification you need to dig a small exploratory hole in the corner of a room which will be easily filled afterwards.
