Joist visible in chimney stack - looking to install wood burner
Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.45 PM
Hi, We would love to get a wood burner in our 100-odd year old Victorian Terrace. We had the chimney cleaned a while ago and were told that there seemed to be a joist from the upper floor visible through the brickwork inside the chimney (apparently it looked like a brick has been knocked out of the chimney and the joist was resting in the gap). Is it possible to remedy this in some way so that we could install a wood burner - - does lining the chimney resolve this sort of issue? Many thanks, Andy

Andy.
If the joist end is in the chimney then you need to get this fixed. Two reasons the first is the chimney can not have holes in it because the products of combustion, including carbon monoxide, will enter the house. Secondly the joist end might catch fire.
Installing a liner will not solve the problem. A liner is only a liner and the chimney needs to be sound before you install the liner. Liners have a limited lifespan so if it does deteriorate then the chimney needs to able to work without the liner.
I would recommend getting the chimney surveyed with a camera and smoke tested by a HETAS qualified engineer. They should be able to then advise you what to do.
Hope this helps

When installing a wood burner they will probably install a flue liner up through your chimney. This takes away all the fumes. As long as they know there is a joist sat there they will advise you what to do

Happy to visit and advise for free but the two guys above are right. You will need to get the chimney sorted but with modern flexi flues that we can wrap insulation around we can insert this and it should be safe.
