Hello,
Currently I have a fuse board in my kitchen above the kitchen units which is a pain to get to plus its an old box.
I am planning to get a new kitchen with the extension so it would be an ideal time to move it and i was hoping to relocate it to a cupboard under the stairs which has good access. This is roughly 2 meters away from the current box.
Is this a possible thing to be moved and if so what would be good tips to look for when having someone quote and do the work?
I am hoping it's something i can move so it doesn't have to sit inside a new kitchen unit and take up room.
Thanks in advance!
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi yes you can move the consumer unit if it is moved more than 3meters away from the service head (main incoming supply) then you will need to install a 60,80 of 100 amp isolator depending on the size of your service head fuse. When hiring someone to carry out the make sure that they are a registered electrician with NICEIC, Napit, elecsa ect.
Remember, you will need to disconnect that to disconnect the Tails from the Meter. To do this you will need to get the Network owner (DNO) to pull the main fuse and You will alsop need to get the energy supplier to disconnect the tails from the meter and connect your new tails or maybe they will fit a service isolator switch. Whichever way you go, I would agree with the last comment and get a registered electrician to do the work and complete the full Installation Test and issue a Report.

It's worth phoning your energy provider to request an isolator be fitted near the meter sooner rather than later (so the supply can be turned off when moving the board).
It used to be free but now it only seems to be free if you get your meter upgraded to a smart meter. Otherwise it's chargeable
The reason it's worth doing soon is because it can be a bit of a merry-go-round getting them to do the work. Plus when you get someone to quote for the work it they will really appreciate you having done that in advance. (I speak from experience having had to cancel a day's work because the DNO didn't turn up to fit the isolator)
