Combustible material how close can they be to a gas fire
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.21 PM
We have a 60s bungalow with a tiled fire place and hearth. To modernise the fire place I would like to add a MDF fire surround. How close can this be to the fire to comply with regs. Can the edge of the hearth have MDF trim fitted, if how far from the fire must this be?

British Standard Specification (BS1251) states:
"Where a fireplace consists of a marble, stone or ceramic back panel and hearth together with a wooden mantelpiece. There shall be a clearance to combustible material of 300 mm above the fire opening and 150 mm either side of the fire opening to the start of the wooden mantel."
