Replacing an oven on an old fuse box

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.00 PM

Hi, I have a 90cm Belling Kensington currently connected to a 30A fuse (electrician that came suggested it's circa 1970s). The oven needs replacing. I am aware that I need to replace the fuse box in favour of RCDs but that is a bigger job than I can currently afford on top of replacing the oven. Am I OK to replace the oven like-for-like on the current wiring and protection and sort out the fuse box situation at a later date? Thanks

Hi, It should be OK. RCD protection is always recommended but the new 18th Edition BS7671 only makes it mandatory for sockets and lighting. I am asuming you don't have one of those cooker switches with a socket on it? If you are just swapping out the oven and not touching any other electrics then it should be fine - a very short summary of the regulation is that new installations should not be less safe than before. Keep that as a rule of thumb. Depending on what CCU you have you may be able to change the breaker to an RCBO which offers RCD protection without chaging the whole board. However, if you have a very old cartridge or fuse wire board then an uprgrade should definitely be on your To Do list! Many thanks, Geek Electrics

Hi Kwayley, If the fuseboard is as old as your electrician suggests I wouldn't recommend installing a new oven on to the current protection. However a cheaper alternative for you would to be to install a smaller fuseboard with RCD protection next to your current one to provide the protection for the cable supplying the cooker and the cooker itself. We often do this when rewiring kitchens and the current fuesboard doesn't have RCD protection and the customer doesn't want it to be replaced.
