Hi,
I'm planning on skimming my hallway and have finished stripping all of the wallpaper, all 3 paint soaked layers! 😅.
There are only a few small specks remaining which are pretty hard on the wall, but also some wallpaper paste. My question is, as I'm having the area skimmed and not painted over, how important is it to scrape off the wallpaper paste and any little specks of wallpaper remaining? Does this have an adverse affect on the PVA that's applied before skimming?
Thanks.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
Hi there,
My suggestion is that you need to scrape all remaining wallpaper from wall as it could result in air bubble being formed under plaster which may cause plaster come off , crease or crack. With regards to remaining paste either try sanding down or scrape it, then I would clean the wall with sugar soap to make sure there is no grease or any dirt on the wall. Finally then give a wall a coat of PVA mixed with water 60/40 ratio. Wait for it to dry then you should be ready to go pretty much. Hope this helps.

All remaining paper, paste on the wall should be removed to stop bubbles/ cracks forming in the plaster.
Hi, try to remove all the paper and paste. It can cause the skim to bubble or crack.
Sugar water is good to use for the remaining paper. Just give it a little time to soak in.

Light steam and sugar soap to make sure all paste and paper is removed completely. As this can cause reactions to any further coatings, be it paint or plaster or both.
A good coat or two of pva to seal and bond ready for skim.
I would recommend removing all the paste and remaining wallpaper was this could result to new plaster not adhering to the xsisting wall. I would recommend sugar soap and a good scraping.
Hope this helps you
Make sure all your paper is removed as this will not take to the plaster and will 100% blister.PVA is no longer used by myself when over skimming so I use thistle bond it.This should b applied 24 hrs before your plasterer arrives. This is only my opinion as I've had issues with pva
Do your best to remove all the paper, Giving the wall a quick sand always helps. Personally i do not really use PVA i prefer to use Knauf Betokontakt you can get other brands of the same sort of paint. Betokontakt is more expensive than the others but to me its the best.
