Central Heating

Strange shutoff and start up with brief burning smell

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

Recently, my heating has started acting odd. It will click on as usual, making the typical thermostat sound, run for a few minutes and then the heat turns off without the thermostat. It will stay off for about a minute and then kick backed on. When it kicks back on, it's accompanied by a smell similar to when you first turn the system on after it's been off for a long period of time. The smell only lasts maybe 15 seconds or so and then it finishes its cycle until it reaches the temp and the thermostat cuts it off. It doesn't do this every time it comes on but I'm concerned. If I go to the actual unit, I don't smell anything in the garage that has that burning smell when it clicks back on, only through the vents. I did change the filter because it was overdue but it's continued to do this. Any idea what could cause this?

We could speculate as to the cause(s) but better you call a Gas Safe heating engineer who specialises in boiler repairs to examine then advise, better to be safe then sorry. Bad time of the year I know but you may find an engineer prepared to attend at short notice even if it is just to make safe.
