Bathroom Fitting

Low basin water pressure. Who is responsible, supplier or fitter?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

I recently had a complete bathroom fitted by a bathroom fitting firm. They supplied most of the fittings but gave me the go ahead to source and buy my own taps, bath and radiator as they could not supply the ones I wanted. However the pressure from the basin tap is terrible. The firms response was that they did not supply the taps so it has nothing to do with them. The taps I bought which were specifically for a low pressure system was based on them telling me that I had a low pressure system. I have been told by the supplier of the taps that a drop of 2 meters is needed. They came out and measured and the drop between tank and taps is only 1.7. The fitters have come back to me and said still not their problem as they didn't have anything to do with the tank in the loft. I'm really upset by this. I have spent in excess of £6000 and have a useless tap. Any help or advice appreciated. This was the reply from the fitters after the supplier had been in touch with them. (He (the tap supplier) explained it wasn’t the taps, but said the your header tank was too low, measuring about 1.7m height and it should be minimum 2m. But that’s nothing to do with us, we never moved your header tank or done any work on it! He also said he could get another tap that would work on lower pressure so that might be the answer.. but again nothing to do with us.)

Hi there, do you know why your basin is connected to a tank? Can i confirm that a Cold Water Storage Tank supplies your taps? I would advise that the basin taps are connected to the mains cold water supply if possible? Regards Luke.

in older properties bath basin and wc are connected to cold water storage cistern ( tank ),low pressure taps will work from a tank as long as it is above outlet of tap, your new taps will have a restrictive bore as most new taps do,this is the problem,it may also be your new taps have filters in them that may be blocked, has your plumber used braided steel tap connectors these also restrict flow,if your basin taps are mixer taps connecting the main to cold inlet could give you an unequal pressure problem.

The cold to the basin should never be connected to the tank, it should be run off the cold mains, giving you good cold pressure and no risk of drinking contaminated water. The will be of a less pressure with a new style tap. It comes down to the way they are made a the braided hoses supplied that have a small bore hole.
