Gas boiler (combi) switches off before reaching the temperature set on thermostat

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.21 PM

Hi I have a Worcester Bosch combi boiler controlled by Hive wireless room thermostat. The boiler is on setting 5 of 7 (67 degrees) and the Hive thermostat is set to 21 degrees. When the boiler comes on in the morning, the radiators het hot and the temperature quickly reaches 20 degrees (one degree lower than that set on thermostat). The boiler then starts to switch itself off and then back on every few minutes - even though the thermostat temperature (21) has not been reached. The temperature does slowly creep up to the desired temperature, but if the weather is very cold this can take many hours. (I guess it may never reach desired temperature in extremely cold conditions) Once the desired temperature is reached, the heating works as expected. Hot water also works fine. Can you please advise if this is normal expected behaviour for the heating system or if there is some kind of problem. I would have thought that the boiler should stay on continuously until the desired temperature on the thermostat is reached?

Hi From your description your boiler and thermostat are working perfectly. Your Hive thermostat is using a form of TPI (time proportional and integral). This is software in the thermostat which limits the boiler firing and duration times. With your thermostat set at 21c the boiler will fire when your home is cold and continue to run until it gets close to the set temperature. But it will stop within 1-1.5 degrees it will then calculate how much more it needs to fire and for how long until it gradually brings the temperature up to the set temperature. It will then continue to fire for short periods to maintain the temperature. The idea is not to allow the boiler to overshoot the set temperature and make the home too hot and waste fuel. If your Hive allows weather compensation this would help further with temperature control as it will adjust the boiler firing with relation to the external temperature. Roy

there could be a over heat problem within the boiler, poor circulation, pump or blocked heat exchanger or faulty thermister
