Plastering & Rendering

Renovating now to plastering re-plaster over existing, dot and dab or back to brick etc what best?!

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

In the middle of renovation of 1940s semi, with loft extension. Done the big jobs kitchen diner knock through, small side extension, new master bathroom, now onto the rest of house. To plaster and decorate 2 main bedrooms, 1 small office room, hallway, landing and staircases. Had mixed experience in work to date, kitchen diner was patched and skimmed - extension dot and dab new blockwork, kitchen ceiling ripped out (old lath so messy) living room overboarded ceiling, bathroom all boarded on studwork / dot and dab. What are options and benefits of each for rest? Thanks Joe

Generally a finish is only ever as good as the background your working with. If your looking for flat, level, plumb with straight sharp edges/corners then I’d suggest stripping back reinstate with boards or backing plasters and skim! If your just concerned with aesthetics I.e looks good painted, over-skimming is common practice-a lot less mess and disruption! Durafinish offers some great properties for high traffic areas such as hallways/stairs, up to 60% tougher than the usual multi/board finishes.

It all depends on fast you wanted it done and the cost if you just wanted a quick freshen up then you could go over the existing plaster. If you strip it back its a messy job dust wise at least. But personally i would straighten it out with plaster if it was my house. While it is quicker to Dot dab it means using plasterboard fixing if you even want to put shelves the anything on that wall.
