Signs my house used to have a cellar.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.20 PM

Hello, I have just brought a very old property, at least 100 years old, if not older! We took up the flooring in the dining/living area to find old wooden floors boards and a maybe 3ft x 2ft bit of mdf board in the dining area which is right up against the stair case. How would I know if there used to be a cellar there? I did take up 2 small wooden floor boards to have a look underneath, parts have brick walls and its only about 1ft deep so I don't know if maybe there was a cellar there that has been filled in at some point in the past.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Doesn’t point much to a cellar. Most old houses had a void under floor

Does sound like a suspended floor. Look outside for air bricks
