Is it best to fit fire and hearth on top of laminate floor or?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

Hi, I've got a dilemma.... I think it will look a better finish (without beading) if I have the laminate floor fitted first, before having a new gas fire and hearth fitted on top of it, but I don't want to go ahead without asking professional advice first. I know that if we had the fire and hearth fitted first, it would be on a solid surface (concrete floor - as opposed to on top of a laminate floor, although I don't think the floor would be able to move too much anyway if the hearth and fire was fitted on top of it), but it would also mean we would have to put beading around the hearth (which would be black, so I would prefer to paint the beading black, to blend in more, rather than get a wooden colour beading). If I get the floor layer first, then fire on top, I don't have the problem with the beading, but I would love to hear people's opinions. Thanks,

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would cut a groove in the hearth to let the flooring go into and put the hearth directly onto the concrete. In other words, use the edge of the hearth like beading. Putting flooring underneath would not allow for expansion and contraction. Your installer will know the exact reg's regarding hearth size and substrate required.

Just make sure that the underside temperature of the appliance you have chosen does not exceed 100 deg c as most appliances that have these temps above 100 require a constructional hearth and the timber / laminate cannot be there without a 50mm air gap. if the stove requires a superimposed hearth only then a 12mm hearth laid directly onto the laminate will be fine. I hope this helps thanks leigh
