QS wants money for refurbishment but jobs not completed and not happy with jobs carried out

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.20 PM

Had a refurbishment by Quantity surveyor. He wants all the money even though painting has not been done and other bits not completed. Jobs carried out were rushed and not to good standard and not happy with. We have paid 70% of the money but he said we can only withhold £350. The job is almost £20k! Were do we stand? Only got some of the work in writing and the rest in phone calls. Was it just silly of us not to get everything in writing. Any advice would be helpful. It's not a nice situation for us to be in and we just feel a bit helpless.

Hi. It would seem to me to be a request/demand for final payment for a project that is indeed far from completion. The decorating of any project is as immportant as any other stage, because it is the finish

not all in writing, then he cant prove what you owe him, and even that he did the work,10% would be reasonable retention to be paid when you are happy with the work, do not pay till all work completed to your satisfaction.

As above with nothing in writing there is no contract as such so no proof either way, lack of a written agreement works both ways. No work contract, payment agreement, no contract. Personally I Would now want everything done to my satisfaction before parting with an other penny, full payment on satisfactory completion of the project. Good luck Alex
