shower only running hot when cold tap in basin is on

The shower in our ensuite was working perfectly and was a good powerful shower until a few months ago when it suddenly started running cold. We discovered by accident that by running the cold tap in the basin the shower would run hot. This has gradually got worse, and now the shower only runs warm even when the cold basin tap is on and the toilet is flushed periodically through the shower. not an ideal situation! we have pretty high pressure cold water, so this could be the problem, but if so why is this gradually getting worse? can anyone advise what the best thing for us to do is? thanks
