What’s best: Offset or 1:1 scale worktop template for undermounted sink.

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM

Hi. I’ve made a 20mm MDF, 1:1 scale template for my undermounted sink which is 400mm x 550mm. I’ve been advised that to get a accurate template. The recommended way is to use an offset template, in conjunction with a straight cutter and guide bush. Taking the following measuresments into consideration, 30mm guide bush, 12mm cutter = 9mm offset. (Guide-bush diameter - cutter diameter, =18mm, divided by 2 =9mm offset. As the opening is 400mm x 550mm, the offset template would need to be 418mm x 568mm. The template could then be modify by using a 9mm rebate cutter bit introducing an offset to it, then finished with a guided trimmer bit. Is an offset template the best way to make a template for an undermounted sink?

Hi there, when I fit under mounted sinks, I always use the offset template method. I presume that you are mounting this under a solid wood work surface, as you would only alter/ adjust the template once! If however you are fitting it into a man made Solid surface top ie Eathstone etc, you would need to alter the template again to be able to recess the rim, as the sink fits to the underside of the finished surface coating usually about 7/8mm thick, but you would have manufacturers instructions included with your sink, hope this helps.
