Will a 400mm foundation take the load of a GRP roof ?

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM

Hi Guys, I have a conservatory at my home which is 7 x 3.2m (7 m wide, 3.2 length). It has a 4m wall on all 3 sides and very old double glazing windows sitting on the wall. The existing roof is nothing but plastic panels. The foundation beneath the walls is 400mm. The places becomes a freezer during winter and my heating bills just don't look good trying to keep that place warm. If I want to have the roof replaced with a light weight GRP roof with insulation, I am hoping that I can use that space more often. Is it feasible for the 400 mm foundation to take the load of a fibreglass roof ?

Yes, from experience and having replaced our own polycarbonate roof with new rafters, 120mm insulation between two decks - the difference is unbelievable- in winter the room is very snug and heats up quickly when the radiator kicks in; and in summer it is not too hot (it use to be so hot it blew the corks out of my wine bottles). We did use some additional support at windows and the door but the whole experience was good. A room that can be used!

Hi, personality i wouldn’t see a problem in this, longest the new roof didn’t oversead the original weight that is already there, if your choosing a lightweight roof, I wouldn’t see there being a problem.
