Unsure whether our attic floor is reinforced!
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.19 PM
Hello! We've just bought our first house and are re-doing the attic bedroom. Its been a bedroom since before the previous two owners have lived there (so at least since the about 2000). We are pushing back the eaves to give it more space. We've now knocked out the partition walls and the area in the eaves does not have floor boards laid. How can we tell if its safe to lay floorboards on or if it needs reinforcing? Thanks! Max and Joe

Hi guys. Sometime those walls may also be supporting the span of the rafters which may stop the roof from sagging.
You can lay flooring in the eves.

You need consider how do you want to use that room and that area; what do you want put on that place. It is about loading of that construction. Check, if existing floor is reinforced by previous owners already. If yes, then could be alright. Also is needing to consider how strong are floor joists and according that make appropriate solution, for you are extending floor area and this will add the load on the floor.
