Rerouting electrical cables under joists

Hi Do I need to inform the council/building regs if I hire an gas electrician to do the following? I need to drop the some wiring below the floor joists as it is sitting over the joists where I want to install PIR insulation boards. I've heard that to place the PIR over the wiring I'd have to increase the size of the wires to account for possible extra heat. Also would an electrician expect the floor to be totally lifted beforehand or is that just a matter of personal choice. Cheers

Technically it is not notifiable work, the only time you would need to notify building control is if the circuit would need to be rewired back to the consumer unit. Adding insulation around cables can lead to the cable current carrying capacity to be derated. There is a calculation that will need to be performed that will also take into account the amount of cables grouped together, the length of the run and other factors to determine the cable size required. It is always nice to find the flooring lifted for us but it is never expected.

Remember just because it isn't notifiable doesn't mean it shouldn't meet current regulations. That's why a minor works certificate ought to be produced to ensure the work has been done properly and safely. Hopefully your gas engineer is part p qualified! Not all are. I've seen some very amateur wiring from gas engineers in the past.
